The Book as an Object

Group Show, The Chelsea Antiquarian Book Fair, London 2010

For the last eight years Nancy has been embarking on a project to consider the meaning of a book. Why should it be a ‘still life’ when reading a book is so active – one which engages so fully our most complicated muscle, our brain? While technology and flat screens provoke a passive stillness in the viewer, books evoke the opposite – an active stillness where the imagination is engaged.

These are her earlier books, painted for the Chelsea Antiquarian Book Fair; the series evolves further with her 2017 exhibition ‘Still Reading’.
